The origins of the IAA (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) can be traced back to more than 115 years. In 1897, 8 motor vehicles were exhibited to the public at the Bristol Hotel in Berlin. From these humble beginnings, a regular exhibition was established. Due to its high visitor and exhibitor turnout, the IAA was developed into a yearly alternating exhibition of passenger cars and commercial vehicles in 1991.
The International Motor Show Cars (IAA) is the world’s most comprehensive show of the automotive industry for everybody who develops, manufactures or uses passenger cars. A special feature is the large presence of suppliers throughout the whole automotive value added chain. Around 400 exhibitors from the supply industry are presenting their products.
The IAA shows a unique broad range of the automotive industry:
Statistics of the IAA Cars 2013
The 65th IAA Cars in 2013 consolidated its position as the leading international trade fair. It is the most international motor show, with 42 per cent of exhibitors and 44 per cent of journalists coming from other countries. The IAA hosted 159 world premieres, making it by far the most important automotive trade show anywhere in the world, and also the one eliciting the greatest response from the media. The IAA had once again demonstrated the great standing it enjoys as the world’s most important show for the whole of the automotive industry and it was justifiably called “The world’s most automobile show”.
The IAA 2013 attracted 881,100 visitors, which was slightly above the average of the ten most recent events. On the last IAA weekend far more visitors attended compared with the previous years. 17 per cent of the visitors came from abroad. The proportion of trade visitors on the Trade Days rose to 77 per cent, the overall share of trade visitors came to 35 per cent. In addition to the absolute number, the quality of the trade visitors represents a key criterion for the exhibitors. 51 per cent of exhibitors, i.e. over half, were either satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of the expert visitors. This year 35 per cent of trade visitors had managerial positions. 69 per cent of them were players in purchasing and procurement decisions. The IAA was therefore able to maintain its good reputation as a meeting point for decision-makers.
Among the 1,098 registered exhibitors, 461 came from abroad, which was 42 per cent of the total. This year exhibitors from 35 countries attended the IAA. In contrast to the two previous IAAs, 28 per cent of foreign exhibitors came from the People’s Republic of China, which was the largest foreign contingent. Furthermore, the IAA’s approx. 400 suppliers represented the entire value-added chain – this, too, is unique among motor shows. Only at the IAA can visitors see the suppliers’ combined drive for innovation.
